A DANISH TO DIE FOR?

The St. Lawrence Market is a foodie's delight, but not all food there is to die for.

My first visit to the St. Lawrence Market was euphoric. Food, food, everywhere. All the bare ingredients, very fine ingredients galore, meat, cheese, veg and even a big cookware section smack dab in the middle. For a food obsessed glutton such as myself this was paradise indeed.
Strangely I made the decision to go to the market on a full stomach. Perhaps this was because I was being frugal or perhaps it was because I didn't know any better.
Strangely I made the decision to go to the market on a full stomach. Perhaps this was because I was being frugal or perhaps it was because I didn't know any better. There certainly were a variety of tempting items. I opted to have an ice coffee and have a look around. There were some fine fungi available (chanterelles, morels, etc.) and a plethora of fine cheeses. I will most definitely be heading back when I have enough money saved up in my cheese fund piggie bank!

After having a good wander, (and buying soap of all things), I decided to indulge in a little sweetness. There were quite a few bakeries to chose from but apparently I made the worst choice because the blueberry danish I bought was utterly terrible in every way. The pastry was chewy and dry, and the cheese inside was grainy, desiccated and disgusting. The blueberry filling wasn't even particularly good. Lucky for the shop owner I didn't take note of the name, but I certainly will remember its location and choose NEVER to go back again. Perhaps they were having an off day, but in a market that is devoted to the love of food, you certainly should be serving food you love. At least the iced coffee was good.
